Make Your Student Voice Heard in Sacramento
Jane Rodgers, State Council Representative, CSU Stanislaus

College students registering to vote!
Are you tired of rising tuition? What are you willing to do about it? We know that there are two routes to influence elected officials. The first route is to make large contributions to their coalitions and re-election campaigns. (Since most college students are not wealthy, this probably won't work). The second way is to vote in large numbers, so that the politicians have to consider student viewpoints in order to be elected and pass initiatives.

I am asking everyone to vote at least six times in the upcoming special election. (Don't worry, this is perfectly legal!) First, become an expert on the initiatives, then tell two friends, two family members, and two strangers about the initiatives and explain how they should vote and why. Ask them each to "vote six times." Give out voter registration cards and encourage your fellow students to register to vote on November 8. The registration deadline for this special election is October 24.

You may vote via absentee ballot even if you are living in the dorms. Registered voters may apply for an absentee ballot by mail between October 10 and November 1. Applications must be submitted to the county elections officials no later than 5 p.m. on November 1, 2005.

It's very simple: Vote NO on 74, 75, 76, 77, and 78, Vote YES on 79 and 80. You can read more about these propositions at the Alliance for a Better California website http://www.betterca.com/.

Help students get the word out, we deserve to be taken seriously. We care about our futures and the future of education. We will be heard in Sacramento!

Remember to vote in this SPECIAL ELECTION:
