By Julie C. D. Meyer-Houston - CTA State Council Representative - Sonoma State University, Chapter President
Here are some photos of grassroots efforts for campaigning in favor of California's Proposition 47, the CTA-endorsed school bonds initiative.
Inside the front windshield of my car, in lieu of my regular sunshade, I placed a handmade poster urging everyone to VOTE YES on Prop. 47. My car is parked in front of one of the main entrances onto the Sonoma State University campus. (This is an example of passive activism, but the message is still clear!)
This time, my car is parked in front of the main entrance to a retail shopping center. This is the view from the sidewalk and street.
This photo shows that all of us can also stand, with a handmade poster in hand, near the entrance of a major retail store. The words on the poster are "Student Calif. Teacher[s] Assoc. Urge YOU to VOTE YES Prop 47 School Bond."
Throughout the Fall 2002 Campaign period, I will be phone banking at the Redwood Service Center in Santa Rosa, precinct-walking with various teacher associations to elect CTA-endorsed candidates for several different school board races, leafleting, tabling, writing letters to the editors of both city and campus newspapers regarding CTA's positions on the Propositions and candidates it supports.
Student CTA's Committee on Political Action passed a resolution stating that we must make every effort to assist in voter registration drives and inform our members about the Association's political recommendations.
