When I look at my major requirements in the Humboldt State University Catalog I always feel so overwhelmed. I just sit there and want to cry. There seems to be a never ending list of General Education (GE) classes; both upper and lower division. How can anyone complete all this coursework and still get their major classes finished as well? It may seem impossible, but I am determined to get it done and not go crazy in the process.
My idea is simple, keep your schedule each semester or quarter varied -- mix it up! People who try to get every single lower division GE class finished by the junior year may lose their excitement for their major because they haven't ever taken any classes for their own major! Although many upper division major classes do have prerequisites, there are always some that don't. Those classes should be put into your schedule during the time when you are also getting GE courses out of the way. That way you don't lose focus on what you're working toward in the long run. Furthermore, taking some upper division classes in your first two years in college exposes you to a more experienced group of students who are wiser and more cultured in college life. They are great sources of information about which classes and which teachers are good and well.... not so good. Plus, they can also provide tips about just surviving through those really difficult classes.
In addition, when you get to your senior year you don't want to be overwhelmed with only your "key-stone" classes. Something to lighten the mood when you are working on the hardest classes that you have ever been through would be really nice. An easy lower division GE class that you previously postponed would be a nice course to fall back on when you are otherwise completely drowning in your final major classes.
So, just remember to mix it up and try to not get engulfed by your general education requirements. Variety is the spice of life!
