Cultural Diversity Exercise
By Rudy Jimenez Ortiz/Ethnic Minority Representative/CSU San Marcos
Hello Future Educators! I would love to share with you an exercise you can use in your future class to celebrate cultural diversity. This cultural diversity exercise is one that I learned at the CTA San Diego Imperial Valley Fall Leadership Conference. It is called the "Me Bag." From this activity I firmly believe you and your students together can learn how every person is part of diversity, and how through our differences we share similarities. Enjoy the exercise!
"Me Bag"
Material Required
Small Paper Lunch Bags (for each student)
Strips of paper
Pencils or Colored Pens
Instructions
- Have participants take as many strips of paper as desired.
- Ask them to write on the individual strips descriptive words that reflect who they are and/or words that describe cultural traditions that have played a significant role in who they are.
- Have participants place the strips of paper in the bag.
- Have each participant randomly pull out a word or phrase and share with the group why they feel this word or tradition is significant to who they are.
- After everyone shares, discuss the diversity of the group and draw out the similarities in the group.
