Report from the December 8-9 Executive Board Meeting
The Student CTA Executive Board met December 8-9, 2001 in Burlingame. The following actions were taken by the board:
State Council Representatives are given the task of informing their respective state council committees about the lack of employment rights for K-12 first-year teachers as presented in the NEA pamphlet, Where Should I Teach? How Each State Views New Teachers. (July 2001).
Additionally, a new business item will be presented at the Feb 1-3, 2002 State Council stating, "Student CTA urges CTA, by whatever means possible, to obtain due process rights for probationary teachers."
SEMAC (Student Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee) will provide another free diversity workshop in the Los Angeles area on March 23 to address other minority groups. The workshop will be titled "Another Diversity Meets Education."
Joanna Szeto from San Francisco State University be deemed the winner of the t-shirt design contest, and that we use her design on the new shirts, recognizing her victory with her signature. The t-shirts will have the SCTA design on the front and Joanna's design on the back.
A book drive will be held at both the Northern and Southern Regional Conferences. The books will be donated to a school of greatest need in the conference area. To motivate donations donors will receive 5 raffle tickets for a special prize with each book they donate.
SCTA will make flyers for distribution at state council to collect shampoos, conditioners, soap, etc. (samples from hotel rooms) for distribution to charities involving children, women and homeless individuals.
A special election to fill the 2 vacant State Council Representative positions will be held if the 2 alternates do not respond by Dec. 31, 2001 or do not want the position.
