Since May, CTA has:

Aided Affiliates in Settling Healthy Contract Settlements
After lengthy negotiations, the Placerville Elementary Education Association achieved a 4 percent off schedule agreement for 2003-04. El Dorado County Teachers Association negotiated an agreement that amounted to 5.2 percent over two years. The association applied 2.1 percent on the schedule and the remaining 3.1 percent to medical. The Mojave Faculty Association agreed to restructuring the 2003-04 salary schedule which should yield the equivalent of a 5 percent increase.  Portola Valley EA received a 2.5 percent increase for 2003-04 and a 3.5 percent increase for 2004-05.

Helped West Contra Costa District Win Millions in State, Local Funds
Thanks to some behind-the-scenes work by CTA, the state Legislature passed a bill that will allow the beleaguered West Contra Costa school district to refinance a 1991 $28.5 million state loan from 6 percent to 1.6 percent interest saving the district millions of dollars. The relief package follows a successful effort by the United Teachers of Richmond to help pass an $8 million parcel tax to restore libraries, counselors and athletics. The influx of funding will reduce by half the $16.5 million in budget cuts made in March to keep the district solvent.

Successfully Launched "Healthy Kids" Project in Tracy
The CTA-supported Teachers for Healthy Kids Project and the Tracy Education Association joined forces to reach out to families in the Tracy Unified School District whose children have no health insurance - and provided a total of 241 families with information on health plans available through the state’s Healthy Families program. Teachers sent home health insurance surveys that were used to determine which families needed help. The goal of Teachers for Healthy Kids is to enroll uninsured students in the statewide program. More information can be obtained through the website at: http://www.teachersforhealthykids.com/

Brought a "Road Show" to Teachers in Rural Mendo-Lake Counties
A CTA "Road Show" traveled more than 500 miles to visit teachers in 15 locals throughout rural Lake and Mendocino Counties, bringing member benefit information and services to areas that rarely have an opportunity to visit the Ukiah Regional Resource Center. Approximately 200 teachers visited the mobile office in the recreational vehicle before school, at lunch or after school.

Won Unfair Labor Practices Charge Related to Bargaining
CTA filed and settled an unfair labor practice charge against the Inglewood Unified School District after the district adopted an emergency resolution allowing it to override contract provisions in the event of a work stoppage. Among other things, the resolution required a doctor’s note for any absence. One school held a wildcat strike that resulted in several teachers being docked a day’s pay. As a result of legal action, the resolution was rescinded and the teachers docked will have an opportunity to be paid by obtaining a doctor’s note or doing four hours of inservice.
