Project Criteria and Specifications
Awards Program Description
The César E. Chávez Memorial Education Awards  Program will provide recognition for students and their teachers who demonstrate an understanding of the vision and guiding principles by which César E. Chávez lived his life. The Awards Program will honor the memory of this great man and ensure that the spirit of his work continues in the classrooms of California.
General Awards Criteria
Awards must focus on one or more of the following and show the relationship to César E. Chávez's life and legacy:
- Principles of non-violence
- Self determination through unionization (forming and joining unions)
- Social justice for farm workers
- Safe food / health / environmental issues
- Human and civil rights issues
- Teamwork, cooperation, collaboration, service to others
- Empowerment of the disenfranchised
- Innovation and education
Eligibility
One student or a group project of no more than five (5) students (K-Community College), in conjunction with a CTA member. Grade level categories include:
- Kindergarten - Second grade
- Third - Fifth grades
- Sixth - Eighth grades
- Ninth - Twelfth grades
- Community College
The projects must be submitted in the following categories and meet the following specifications:
Category 1: WRITTEN ESSAYS
- Length of essay
K-2 Age appropriate composition 3-5 200 - 300 words 6-8 400 - 600 words 9-12 800-1100 words CC 1000 to 1500 words
- Format of essay
A. 1" margins all around Double-spaced 12 pt. Font (Times New Roman) Pages numbered B. Include a cover page with title of essay, student name, school/campus, grade level, and CTA member name C. Staple in upper left corner (no paper clips) D. Grades 9 - Community College must be typed; otherwise letter explaining circumstances must be included from submitting CTA member E. Do not put essay into folder or binder
Category 2: VISUAL ARTS (Paintings, Drawings, Collages, Posters, Original Technologically Generated Art)
- Size of art entry: 8˝" x 11" to 18" x 24" (including matted/border edge)
- Media (mixed media accepted)
Drawings (Pastel; Pencil; Ink; Charcoal) Paintings (Oil, Watercolor; Acrylic; Airbrush; Tempera) Posters (Block Printing; Silk Screens) Collages Original Technologically Generated Art
- Must be display ready (mounted/matted/border edge)
- Must provide a written explanation (one-third of the determining score)
* For the category of Visual Arts, videos will not be accepted at this time.
Entries and Applications that do not meet all specifications will not be considered.
All entries shall be judged utilizing the appropriate subject matter rubrics based on the California State Department of Education and/or the California Arts Education Association.
Community College level entries shall be judged utilizing statewide Academic Senate standards.
Applicants must submit a complete, typed or legibly printed application form with each entry.
Deadline: Entries with each application and entry must be received no later than March 24, 2006 in order to be considered.
It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the application and entries are submitted by the deadline.
