Position: Regional UniServ Staff - Community Outreach Consultant, Region 1

Unit Description and/or Conditions Unique to Assignment
This position provides service to members and community-based organizations. The applicant must possess strong interpersonal communication skills, familiarity and experience with issues pertaining to English language learners and schools of greatest need, as well as successful experience in political action and community organizing.
The office will be responsible for coordinating community outreach projects in other parts of the state on an as needed basis. Extensive travel is a requirement of the position. The Community Outreach office is currently located near downtown Los Angeles and in the CTA Burlingame office.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Liaison with educational and community-based organizations in the development of interest based organizing that leads to educational and community socio-economic advancement.
- Provide staff assistance and serve as a resource/consultant to CTA members and staff as well as community-based organizations to facilitate community involvement and participation in building coalitions and problem solving.
- Organize CTA members and diverse community-based groups for political action in response to identified critical issues and needs.
- Facilitate in communication, training and program development for various community groups.
- Assist in training members in Community Outreach goals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- BA/BS, advanced degree preferred.
- Experience working in culturally diverse environments.
- Willingness to learn about and become sensitive to diverse cultures.
- Experience with and broad understanding of professional teacher organization programs and services at local, state and national levels.
- Successful experience with and demonstrated skill in organization and coordination of complex group projects.
- Ability to work irregular hours on an ongoing basis.
- Ability to work in a fast paced, innovative, changing environment.
- Must be a self starter and able to multi-task and complete activities from start to finish with little direct supervision.
- Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication. Bilingual language ability is preferred.
- Ability to use computers or willingness to learn Microsoft Office programs necessary to support organizing, political action and communication.
- Broad understanding of the critical issues and problems facing public schools and the education profession in California, as well as the issues of critical importance to the local communities.

*This position is in a bargaining unit represented by CSO. Salaries are established by a collective bargaining agreement. Step placement is also determined by the CTA/CSO Agreement.
