Council Decides October 2002

"Council Decides" is a CTA publication that summarizes the activities of each of the four State Council of Education meetings that is held each school year. CTA's State Council is the 770-member policy making representative assembly of the 330,000-member teachers association.

In the first meeting of the 2002-03 year, CTA President Wayne Johnson warned the 770-delegate State Council that it faced crucial times for public education in California, which is a major reason to vote for the re-election of Gov. Gray Davis.

Ivins talks power and politics with State Council

Syndicated columnist and television commentator Molly Ivins had State Council members rolling in the aisles as she shared her perspective on politics. Despite her humorous take on the political scene, Ivins also had a serious message regarding the importance of voting.

Doggett urges State Council to "Rock the Vote" for Prop. 47

CTA Executive Director Carolyn Doggett urged State Council members to vote - and to get others to vote - particularly for Prop. 47, the state school bond that would provide $13 billion for school construction projects.

Council hears from child health expert

Detailing a new partnership between CTA and the California Association of Health Plans to bring low-cost health insurance options to the state's neediest children, Robert Ross, M.D., thanked CTA for its involvement in the state Healthy Families program.

State Sen. Jack O'Connell, candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction, urged Council to vote in the Nov. 5 election.
