In a hurry to grow up

It has been two decades since David Elkind, Ph.D., wrote the original book on The Hurried Child: Growing Up Too Fast Too Soon. Since then, the media and society have compounded the problem of rushing children into adulthood. More than ever, children are exposed to overwhelming pressures that can lead to a wide range of childhood and teenage crises, such as premature sexual activity, drug use, violence and academic failure.

In this third edition of the book, the professor of child development at Tufts University takes a detailed, updated look at the world of today's children and teens in terms of the Internet, classroom culture, school violence, movies, television and a growing societal incivility. The author shows a whole new generation where hurrying occurs - and why.

The book, which costs $16, is available from Perseus Publishing. For more information visit the Web site [www.perseusbooksgroup.com] or call (617) 252-5212.
